Preventing and treating HIV in Saint Petersburg

According to the Centre for AIDS Prevention and Control in Saint Petersburg in the Russian Federation, fewer people are becoming infected with HIV in the city. “Ten years ago, Saint Petersburg was among the top five most affected cities in the Russian Federation. South Africa: Focus on blessers driving HIV

They are known as the players, plyers, sugar daddies or blessers. They enter into relationships with young girls as a transaction: you give me unprotected sex and I give you money, a cell phone, airtime, new clothes, make up, school fees, a car, whatever you or your family might need. Usually there’s an up-tick in something and media coverage follows like, well, clockwork. Just as predictable are the narratives invoked to contextualise the findings - online dating, hookup apps, ‘complacency as a result of improvements to HIV treatment', decreased condom use and more young people travelling overseas.
